I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration

President Trump is facing a test to his presidency unlike any faced by a modern American leader. The dilemma — which he does not fully grasp — is that many of the senior officials in his own administration are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations.

On Aug. 17, they were joined by another 60 officials, and over 170 added their names on Aug. 20. Here’s an non-exhaustive list of major figures who have voiced their support for Brennan.

U.S. Allies Sign Sweeping Trade Deal in Challenge to Trump

A trade pact originally conceived by the United States to counter China’s growing economic might in Asia now has a new target: President Trump’s embrace of protectionism. A  group of 11 nations — including major United States allies like Japan,  Canada and Australia — signed a broad trade deal on Thursday in Chile’s  capital, Santiago, that challenges Mr. Trump’s view of trade as a zero-sum game filled with winners and losers.

Democrats flipped a Missouri state legislature seat that Trump won by 28 points

Democrats had another good Tuesday night of special elections, this time in Missouri, where Mike Revis won a 3-point victory in House District 97, which President Donald Trump had won by 28 points. That 31-point swing relative to the 2016 election was extraordinarily large, but actually not the greatest swing of the night. Over in House District 144, Democrats took a relatively narrow 53-47 loss in a district that Trump carried by  59 points.

Republican Jeff Flake, a Fierce Trump Critic, Will Not Seek Re-Election for Senate

Mr. Flake made his announcement in an extraordinary, 17-minute speech on the Senate floor, in which he challenged not only the president but also his party’s leadership. He deplored “the casual undermining of our democratic ideals, the personal attacks, the threats against principles, freedom and institutions, the flagrant disregard for truth and decency” that he said has become so prevalent in American politics.

Legal challenge to Arpaio pardon begins

After President Trump’s pardon of ex-sheriff Joe Arpaio, who had been convicted of criminal contempt for violating a court order designed to stop the violation of the constitutional rights of suspected illegal immigrants, conventional wisdom — and certainly the Trump administration — would have us believe that Trump’s pardon powers are unlimited. However, never before has someone stretched the pardon power so beyond its original intent. Trump has now drawn scrutiny not simply from critics of his racist rhetoric but from the court itself.

Lurid Trump allegations made by Louise Mensch and co-writer came from hoaxer

Explosive allegations about Donald Trump made by online writers with large followings among Trump critics were based on bogus information from a hoaxer who falsely claimed to work in law enforcement. Claude Taylor tweeted fake details of criminal inquiries into Trump that were invented by a source whose claim to work for the New York attorney general was not checked, according to emails seen by the Guardian. The allegations were endorsed as authentic and retweeted by his co-writer Louise Mensch.

US government demands details on all visitors to anti-Trump protest website

The US government is seeking to unmask every person who visited an anti-Trump website in what privacy advocates say is an unconstitutional “fishing expedition” for political dissidents. The warrant appears to be an escalation of the Department of  Justice’s (DoJ) campaign against anti-Trump activities, including the harsh prosecution of inauguration day protesters.

‘I’m officially off the Trump Train’: Trump’s online base is furious about the Syria strikes

“I voted for you, my whole family voted for you,” said Angelo John Gage, a Marine veteran who was once the chairman of the white nationalist National Youth Front. “We all busted our a–es to destroy the fake media news, and now you’re falling for it.” His video reaction to rumors of U.S. military action in Syria was a direct address to Trump, and it went viral. Both WikiLeaks and Infowars reposted it.

“Democrats are acting like a bunch of cowards”: Trump’s Syria strike opens a rift on the left

Progressive activists say they’re dismayed that senior congressional Democrats aren’t more strongly condemning President Donald Trump’s strikes against Syria on Thursday night. Some Democrats in Congress dinged Trump on the process — not seeking congressional approval — but largely supported the action  itself. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called punishing Syria’s Bashar al-Assad “the right thing to do,” and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) labeled the strikes a “proportional response.” Pelosi has also called for the House to end its recess and reconvene to discuss the attacks.

A top Putin critic on how to oppose Trump: “making him look like a loser is crucial”

The US president shouldn’t need to speak like a tyrant. But Trump’s still obsessed with legitimacy; hence his constant falsehoods about overwhelming victory and crowd size. You have an entirely unqualified president with autocratic instincts and dangerous advisers, who is quite possibly compromised by a malign foreign interest. We gave Putin a chance in Russia, and it was the last free election we ever had. It’s far better to act and later admit you overreacted than to do nothing until it’s impossible to act.

Republicans hit back at Commons Speaker John Bercow for blocking Donald Trump’s address to Parliament

Commons Speaker John Bercow has become embroiled in controversy after insisting US President Donald Trump should not be allowed to address Parliament during his state visit. Opponents on the left are making plans to show up in force when members of Congress hold town forums during this month’s recess.

For weeks, a swelling group has been showing up every Friday here at the local office of Representative Rodney Frelinghuysen to demand that he hold a town-hall meeting to answer its concerns about his fellow Republicans’ plan to dismantle the Affordable Care Act. After weeks without an answer, the congressman’s staff replied that he would be too busy, that such gatherings took considerable planning and that just finding a meeting place could be tough. So the group, NJ 11th for Change, secured venues in all four counties that Mr. Frelinghuysen represents for times during the congressional recess this month - and constituents plan to show up even if he does not.

Trump is being sued on behalf of 42 million people – the citizens of NY, VA, Massachusetts, and Washington state

Donald Trump’s executive order, which temporarily banned immigration from certain Muslim-majority countries, and suspended admission of refugees from Syria, sparked immediate and massive protests and action. In addition to the ACLU’s actions, as well lawsuits from the Committee on American-Islamic Relations and the city of San Francisco, three states have now sued the federal government over the executive order, saying that it violates the constitutional rights of people in the United States and establishes a discriminatory law on the basis of religion.

Republican Lawmakers in Five States Propose Bills to Criminalize Peaceful Protest

On Saturday, the Women’s March on Washington will kick off what opponents of the incoming administration hope will be a new era of  demonstrations against the Republican agenda. But in some states, nonviolent demonstrating may soon carry increased legal risks — including punishing fines and significant prison terms — for people who participate in protests involving civil disobedience.

Protesting, privileged college kids know nothing about social injustice

As you can tell, I am not particularly impressed with the social justice engagement of the precious little pop tarts who decided to skip class to march - 40 people strong! - down a Main Line thoroughfare to let the suburban police department that keeps them safe know it is nothing but a ritzy extension of the KKK.
