As Tensions With U.S. Worsen, Europe Courts New Partners

President Trump is inciting a trade war, undermining NATO and painting Europe as a foe. It’s no wonder, then, that the European Union is looking elsewhere for friends. On Tuesday in Tokyo, it signed its largest trade deal ever, a pact with Japan that will slash customs duties on products like European wine and cheese, while gradually reducing tariffs on cars. The agreement will cover a quarter of the global economy — by some measures the largest free-trade area in the world — and is the latest in a string of efforts either concluded or in the works with countries like Australia, Vietnam and even China.

Democrats flipped a Missouri state legislature seat that Trump won by 28 points

Democrats had another good Tuesday night of special elections, this time in Missouri, where Mike Revis won a 3-point victory in House District 97, which President Donald Trump had won by 28 points. That 31-point swing relative to the 2016 election was extraordinarily large, but actually not the greatest swing of the night. Over in House District 144, Democrats took a relatively narrow 53-47 loss in a district that Trump carried by  59 points.

New York Expects Fewer Foreign Tourists, Saying Trump Is to Blame

The city’s tourism marketing agency, NYC & Company, says that 300,000 fewer international travelers are expected to visit the city this year than in 2016. For the first time in seven years, New York City officials expect the number of foreign visitors to decrease, a drop they attribute to the protectionist policies and rhetoric of President Trump - saying that those moves are scaring off many of the visitors who have helped fuel the city’s robust growth since the last recession.
