General Assembly voices concern over Iranian human rights record
United Nations Member States today expressed deep concern at reports of human rights violations in Iran, including torture, the use of cruel punishments such as flogging and amputations and "pervasive gender inequality and violence against women," and called on Tehran to strengthen its national human rights institutions.
Saudi Arabia wants UN vote on assassination plot
Saudi Arabia is pressing for a UN vote Friday on a resolution condemning an alleged plot to assassinate its US envoy and calling on Iran to cooperate with the investigation. The United States has said Iran was behind the plot to kill Adel al-Jubeir in Washington, but the Saudi resolution, which was distributed at the 193-member UN General Assembly on Wednesday, did not directly accuse Iran of involvement.

Human rights groups are pressing the U.N. and the international community to denounce a rash of executions in Iran. They say at least eight of those killed last month were political prisoners.
