For the 6th consecutive year, student activists are banned from pursuing higher education
The Advocacy Council for the Right to Education (ACRE) has stated that the [star system], the practice of banning student activists of the right to education, has been [predominant] in Iran for the past six years. The ACRE has issued a declaration against the practice of banning students and imprisoning them, stating that the process violates all "domestic and international laws". Freed Iranian doctors say Amnesty International campaign gave them hope
Iranian doctors Arash and Kamiar Alaei, imprisoned for their internationally renowned work on HIV/AIDs, were at a low point when they heard of Amnesty International's campaign to free them. It was the autumn of 2008 and, after four months of interrogation or solitary confinement in Tehran's Evin prison, they feared they had been forgotten. The brothers - now free and recently reunited - said the news of the campaign by Amnesty International and others gave them hope.
Mahdieh Golroo and other students issued more prison sentences
A six-month prison sentence was upheld in branch 54 of the Revolutionary Court for student activist Mahdieh Golroo, according to the Committee of Human Rights Reporters. In 2010 Mahdieh Golroo wrote a letter from prison for the anniversary of Student Day (16 Azar/December 7th). Her new 6-month sentence, which is additional to an existing one-year prison term she is already serving, was issued by Judge Moghiseh in branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court. She was charged with, Engaging in propaganda activities against the regime and Conspiring to act against national security . The sentence was upheld by the Appeals Court.
Iranian student activists write letter to Obama on anniversary of embassy hostage-taking
On the occasion of 13 Aban (November 4th, the anniversary of the hostage-taking of the American embassy in Iran), a group of current and former Iranian student activists have written a letter to Amerrican president Barack Obama. Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi jailed for 11 years
A prominent Iranian human rights activist who was taken seriously ill after being detained by the authorities has been sentenced to 11 years in jail. Narges Mohammadi, 39, the deputy head of Iran's Defenders of Human Rights Centre (DHRC), a rights organisation presided over by the Nobel peace laureate Shirin Ebadi, was picked up last year by security officials who raided her house in middle of the night without a warrant for her arrest

Young Political Activist Receives 50 Lashes for Blogging
Somayeh Tohidlou, political activist and Tehran University Ph.D. student in Sociology, wrote in her blog yesterday that authorities at Evin Prison carried out her sentence of 50 lashes. The flogging took place at Evin Prison just as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad took off for New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly. Flogging is an inhumane punishment and a type of torture frequently used by the Iranian Judiciary for both regular and political suspects.

Student Activist in Solitary Confinement on Hunger Strike
To protest his conditions inside Babol s Matikola Prison, imprisoned student activist Ashkan Zahabian embarked on a hunger strike on 31 August. Zahabian s father, Hassan Zahabian, told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that prison staff moved his son to solitary confinement after he began his hunger strike, even though, according to other prisoners, he was in a coma.

Iran releases prominent actor and filmmaker
Iran has released two prominent cultural figures from jail following intense criticism of its crackdown against artists and rights activists. Pegah Ahangarani, 27, a popular actor and outspoken supporter of the country's opposition green movement, was arrested two weeks ago en route to the women's World Cup. Mahnaz Mohammadi, 37, a documentary filmmaker, was detained by unidentified officials in June.
International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran – Activist Sentenced to Eight Years in Prison for Refusing to Make False Confessions
Atieh Taheri, wife of Azerbaijani journalist and civil activist Saeed Matinpour, spoke with the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran in an interview about her husband s health condition and situation in Evin Prison. Matinpour, 36, studied philosophy at Tehran University and wrote for Zanjan Weekly. He was active in human rights and ethnic minority rights causes and was arrested on 25 May 2007 for participating in a seminar in defense of Turkish-speaking citizens in Turkey. He was sentenced to eight years in prison by Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, presided by Judge Salavati, on charges of "contact with foreigners, and propagating against the regime." Renowned filmmaker Mahnaz Mohammadi was taken from her Tehran home Sunday by unidentified security forces for "unknown" reasons, reported the Iranian opposition website Kaleme. According to the website of former premier Mir-Hossein Mousavi, the prominent women's rights activist may have been seized by intelligence services of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards.

The letter was written in the wake of recent pressures and threats by security forces on the Tavakoli family that led Majid Tavakoli to write a letter from prison requesting that people, in particular media outlets, refrain from temporarily contacting his family.
